[K-TRAVEL], week 3 of Oct - Coffee, Coastlines, and Culture: Your Ultimate Guide to Gangneung!

👋 Welcome to Gangneung! Why You Must Visit

Hey K-Travelers! BonoHyung here, back with another weekly gem outside of Seoul. This week, we're heading east to the stunning coastal city of Gangneung in Gangwon-do province! If you're dreaming of fresh sea air, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, and a deep dive into Korean history, Gangneung is your perfect escape. It offers a refreshing mix of beautiful beaches, rich cultural heritage, and a trendy, vibrant atmosphere that will leave you totally recharged.

Just a quick KTX ride from Seoul, this city is the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Whether you're a fan of K-Dramas, a coffee connoisseur, or a history buff, Gangneung has something special waiting for you.

🗺️ BonoHyung's Perfect Gangneung Itinerary

Ready for an unforgettable trip? Here’s a relaxed course to help you capture the essence of Gangneung.

Course 1: K-Culture & Seaside Views

Start your day at Jumunjin Beach. This spot is famous for a bus stop featured on the album cover for BTS's "You Never Walk Alone" and a breakwater from the iconic K-Drama "Goblin". It’s a pilgrimage site for K-Pop and K-Drama fans, but the beautiful coastline is a treat for everyone. Be prepared for a short, friendly queue to get that perfect photo!

Course 2: The Kingdom of Coffee

Next, head south to Anmok Beach, better known as Gangneung Coffee Street. This entire street facing the sea is lined with unique cafes, from large chains to small, independent roasteries. Grab a seat with an ocean view, sip on some of Korea's best coffee, and just relax. It’s the ultimate chill experience.

Course 3: A Journey Back in Time

After your coffee break, immerse yourself in history at Ojukheon House. This is one of the oldest wooden residential buildings in Korea and the birthplace of the famous Joseon-dynasty scholar Yulgok Yi I and his mother, Shin Saimdang—the figures on the 5,000 and 50,000 won banknotes! The surrounding black bamboo forest gives the house its name and creates a serene, contemplative atmosphere.

Course 4: Local Flavors and Energy

End your day at the bustling Gangneung Jungang Market. This traditional market is the perfect place to dive into the local food scene. From fresh seafood to famous street food snacks, it’s a feast for the senses and a great spot to feel the lively energy of the city.

🍜 A Taste of Gangneung: Must-Try Foods & Restaurants

You can't leave Gangneung without trying its local delicacies! The food here is as refreshing as the sea breeze.

  • Chodang Sundubu (Soft Tofu): Gangneung is famous for its sundubu, which is made with clean seawater, giving it a uniquely soft and savory flavor. Head to the Chodang Dubu Village where numerous restaurants specialize in this dish, from spicy stews (jjigae) to plain, savory versions.
  • Dakgangjeong (Sweet & Crispy Chicken): A star of the Jungang Market, this fried chicken is coated in a sweet and spicy sauce that is absolutely addictive. It's the perfect market snack to enjoy while exploring.
  • Fresh Seafood: Being a coastal city, the seafood is a must! At Jumunjin Fish Market, you can pick your own fresh fish and have it prepared as sashimi (hoe) or in a spicy stew (maeun-tang) at a nearby restaurant.
  • Artisanal Coffee: Of course, you have to indulge in the coffee culture. While on Coffee Street, check out famous spots like Bossa Nova for its rooftop views or other local roasters for their unique blends.

✨ Pro-Tips for Your Gangneung Adventure

  • Getting There: The fastest way to reach Gangneung from Seoul is by the KTX train, which takes about 2 hours. Buses are also a comfortable and slightly cheaper option.
  • Getting Around: While the main tourist spots are somewhat spread out, local buses are convenient. For more flexibility, using taxis is affordable and easy, especially if you're traveling in a small group.
  • Best Time to Visit: Spring and Autumn offer pleasant weather perfect for exploring. Summer is ideal for enjoying the beaches, though it can be crowded.
  • Photo Op at Jumunjin: At the "Goblin" breakwater, you might find vendors renting red scarves and buckwheat flower bouquets to help you perfectly recreate the famous scene!

🎯 Key Points of Your Trip

  • The Vibe: A perfect mix of relaxing beach town and culturally rich city.
  • The Taste: Unique soft tofu made with seawater and the endless aroma of fresh coffee.
  • The View: Stunning East Sea vistas from almost every major spot.
  • The Culture: Walk through one of Korea's most significant historical homes.

That’s a wrap for this week's K-Travel guide! I hope you get to experience the coastal magic of Gangneung soon. It’s a city that truly captures the heart.

Until next time, travel safe and stay curious!
